Applique

This is general term that refers to the technique of attaching pieces of fabric to a quilt or a background fabric in order to create a design. Traditionally, applique is used to add intricate floral or animal motifs to the design. There are various methods used in the applique process, and it can be attached by hand (often called needle-turned applique) or by machine, raw edge or finished edged. Many products exist on the market to hold appliqués in place until it is stitched in place, ranging from small applique pins to special glues and heat activated fusibles. Techniques are usually a matter of personal preference.
