A Fat Quarter is a a term referring to a 1/4 yard of fabric. It is called a Fat Quarter because the way the yard of fabric has been cut produces a wider piece of fabric. To make a fat quarter, first cut the yard in half at the 18″ mark, and then cut each half at the fold.  Each Fat Quarter measures approximately 18″ x 21.” A Skinny Quarter is made by cutting the yard of fabric into 4 pieces that measure approximately 9″ x 42″
