A type of quilting that originated in Japan using larger stitches and heavier threads in an intricate design.  The practice originally served to extend the life of clothing by quilting two garments together, embellishing them with decorative stitches in a geometric or Oriental motif. Traditional sashiko stitching is done with light thread on a dark background.
