Maple Leaf Quilt Block

Maple Leaf Quilt Block

Skill level: easy

The Maple Leaf Quilt Block is a favorite block that makes its way into many autumn-themed quilts and looks especially striking when made in Batik fabrics. Since it’s a simple 9-patch it’s a great block for beginners, who will get to learn a new “trick” when they make the stem.

According to Jinny Beyer’s Quilters Album of Blocks and Borders, this block was first published by Practical Needlework, ca 1910. Similar blocks with alternate colorings are the Apple Leaf and the Tea Leaves Quilt Blocks. In addition, Ms. Beyer shows a grouping of this block attributed to Quilting (1934) which incorporates sashing strips and a sashing post.
