While the Missouri Star Quilt Block has been around for a long time, Jenny Doan of the Missouri Star Quilt company should get credit for putting the block on every quilter’s radar. The Missouri Star Quilt Block is the 3rd most visited block in the Scissortail Quilting Quilt Block Library.

The Missouri Star Quilt Block is an unequal 9-patch construction that is built around a 4×4 grid. So technically, it is both a 4-patch and a 9-patch. To make this block you will need to know how to make square-in-a-square units and quarter-square triangle units. An interesting design feature of this block is that the QST units are used as triangle on the flying geese units, and create a secondary X or Plus design. (Note the reddish coloring in the Missouri Star Quilt Block illustration above.) This secondary design becomes more evident in the quilt layout shown below.
